Born in Taiwan, ex-professional dancer Su Man Hsu’s signature facial is almost insanely good: one of those treatments where – after a tussle between pain and pleasure – pure bliss wins out, leaving your face feeling born-again. It’s Hsu’s Shiatsu-inspired massage style – the rapidity and deftness with which her fingers race over your face and neck is quite amazing – and the depth with which she applies oils, that seems to do it. Good luck finding a treatment of this calibre elsewhere: it’s this reasoning that takes her phalanx of devotees all the way to her Crouch End home for treatments. £120 for 90 minutes. Prepare for party season with a choice treatment

A workout for the face
It's the art form of fascialism created by Taiwanese facialist Su-Man (pictured) who's hybrid beauty treatment is regularly requested by the likes of Hollywood actresses including Anne Hathaway who called it a ‘life-changing experience'.
Naturally, when I heard this I snapped up the next available slot. I felt slightly A-list myself visiting her plush home where she practises out of in a London suburb - and I certainly got the star treatment.
Su-Man's treatment is seriously results-driven; she coaxes the skin to wake up, perk up and plump up. Starting with facial massage she draws on her shiatsu and Pilates expertise, repeating each stroke 36 times to stimulate collagen and blood flow and lift slack muscles.
Next up your face gets a thorough deep cleanse beneath a hot steam machine and there's no holding back in uprooting blackheads and pimples through extraction. Sound uncomfortable? Well it is, but whoever coined the ‘no pain, no gain' mantra probably had incredible skin.
There is some pampering to enjoy though - a soothing mask is applied to feed your skin the nourishment it may be lacking and your neck, head, shoulders, décolletage, arms, hands and feet are massaged in turn. This is certainly not your average facial.
The whole experience was slightly surreal but the results were there to be seen. I was more than happy to be jumping on the tube with no makeup on and at the party I went to later that day I wiped up the complements made about my ‘glowing complexion' and ‘high cheekbones'!
At £120 for a 90 minute appointment it's not cheap but it is good value for money and if you're lucky enough to afford it you won't regret shelling out. I'm with Anne and can't wait to see Su-Man again.

SU-MAN HSU FACIAL at the W Hotel
Bootcamp for you face
Grace loves this... because it's like a bootcamp workout for your face - uncomfortable at times but leaves you feeling 100% better.
It's not the most relaxing facial. But to be honest, I thought if I can be as beautiful as her client, French actress, Juliette Binoche, I'd let her break all my ribs. I found the mantra 'No Pain, No Gain' helped a little as I writhed around and suppressed my yelps.
Gain won out, thankfully - my face was positively glowing after 90 minutes with Su-Man Hsu, former dancer turned shiatsu masseuse turned A-list facialist. She began by scanning my face to establish what treatment was required, and then cleansed and applied steam to open up my pores. A forceful massage of the scalp, neck and back followed (mine was especially vigorous as I have bad shoulders - yours may be painless), to 'open up the channels to the face'. Each stroke is repeated 36 times, loyal to the Chinese thinking that 6 is a lucky number and key to a perfect state of health and happiness.
She then treated me to a bout of extraction. I especially enjoyed her satisfied sighs during this part - suggesting I was particularly blocked before I went in and would leave all fresh-faced. After some gentle exfoliation and more massage, my face was encased in a hydrating 'botanical placenta' mask (smelt better than its name would suggest), while my arms received more of Su-Man's shiatsu-style pummelling. She finished with toner and moisturiser, worked deep into my skin, and low: I had razor-sharp cheekbones and a dewy glow, with none of the red blotches extraction usually wreaks. This woman is some kind of magician.
If you're over 40, Su-Man recommends a weekly visit, but for us kids, once a month will do. I can't wait til I qualify for the weekly regime, frankly.

Anne Hathaway's 'life-changing' facial @ELLEUK
She has described facialist Su-Man Hsu's facials as a 'life-changing experience' and with such praise from the pretty star I had to give it a try.
Su-Man Hsu Facial

Su-Man usually practices out of her own home in Crouch End, but has recently started doing one day a week in cool Leicester Square hotel W's spa (handy for us central-dwelling townies). The W Spa is ultra-modern and oozes luxury: everything's white, white, white, clean, fresh and fabulous.
The treatmentSu-Man is a former dancer and an expert in shiatsu, Pilates and facial massage: and has combined her knowledge to come up with her own unique facial technique. Dubbed as a 'non-invasive alternative to Botox', Su-Man aims to reawaken the skin through massage. Each stroke is repeated 36times in accordance with ancient Chinese beliefs, leaving skin thoroughly exercised and plump.
Following an individual skin analysis (expect total honesty about any problem areas), Su-Man awakens skin with a firm scalp massage, cleanses the skin with steaming and deep-cleans with extractions. Su-Man believes that your complexion is directly affected my your body, so for the treatment to be effective she must 'open your channels', by thoroughly massaging neck, shoulders and décolleté. Following the cleansing, a soothing botanical mask is applied, during which time Su-Man will work on massaging neck, shoulders, back and even feet to keep the energy flowing. The treatment is finished with a toning and moisturising treatment to soothe and treat skin.
Let's get one thing straight: Su-Man's facials are not the most relaxing in town. You won't drop-off with a face mask on and wake up wondering how you've just spent half a week's wages on a nap. She's friendly, straight-talking and ridiculously likeable - even when she's pummelling your tense shoulders or extracting your stubborn black-heads you won't get mad. If I was at all dubious about what to expect from her technique, described by one of her celebrity clients as 'pilates for the face' - I am completely converted. My skin felt tighter, healthier and instantly softer, and the after-facial glow is still there, a week on. A life-changing experience? I think I agree on this one.
Su-Man's signature facials cost £200 for 60minutes at the W Spa. For more information visit www.su-man.com

Clients fly in from Brazil, Russia and the States to see facialist Su-Man. Juliette Binoche swears by her. And so will you after you visit her Zen-like garden shed in Crouch End. Expect to get probed by a skin scanner and have your eye sockets pummelled. No sleeping through this one, but boy it is worth the trip.
