Bootcamp for you face

Grace loves this... because it's like a bootcamp workout for your face - uncomfortable at times but leaves you feeling 100% better.

It's not the most relaxing facial. But to be honest, I thought if I can be as beautiful as her client, French actress, Juliette Binoche, I'd let her break all my ribs. I found the mantra 'No Pain, No Gain' helped a little as I writhed around and suppressed my yelps.

Gain won out, thankfully - my face was positively glowing after 90 minutes with Su-Man Hsu, former dancer turned shiatsu masseuse turned A-list facialist. She began by scanning my face to establish what treatment was required, and then cleansed and applied steam to open up my pores. A forceful massage of the scalp, neck and back followed (mine was especially vigorous as I have bad shoulders - yours may be painless), to 'open up the channels to the face'. Each stroke is repeated 36 times, loyal to the Chinese thinking that 6 is a lucky number and key to a perfect state of health and happiness.

She then treated me to a bout of extraction. I especially enjoyed her satisfied sighs during this part - suggesting I was particularly blocked before I went in and would leave all fresh-faced. After some gentle exfoliation and more massage, my face was encased in a hydrating 'botanical placenta' mask (smelt better than its name would suggest), while my arms received more of Su-Man's shiatsu-style pummelling. She finished with toner and moisturiser, worked deep into my skin, and low: I had razor-sharp cheekbones and a dewy glow, with none of the red blotches extraction usually wreaks. This woman is some kind of magician.

If you're over 40, Su-Man recommends a weekly visit, but for us kids, once a month will do. I can't wait til I qualify for the weekly regime, frankly.

Su-Man's Signature Facial - £120 for 90 mins.
